For something that is shaping the next century, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has a real image problem, mention it in the wrong room and you will hear fears of robots stealing jobs, classroom chaos or a Silicon Valley tech bro takeover (even as that narrative evolves)! However, here is the truth – AI is not a dirty word, AI in Education presents opportunities! It is a reality, a sharp reality and one that is already shaping everything from how children learn to how cities run.

We have daily reminders, that AI is not just a passing trend, it is national infrastructure and it is also global diplomacy and if done well and right, it is also a massive opportunity.

As a nation we need to embrace the potential offered by AI, but we need to be clear and address issues such as ethics and regulations.  It must not be an AI “free-for-all”, with companies engaging in exploitation and “AI washing”. But the worst thing you could do right now, would be to panic and pull back.

AI is in the Driving Seat

  • Big money, big signal – the UK government’s £1 billion pledge for AI infrastructure, announced at London Tech Week is not just political theatre, it is a signal to the world, the UK is part of the AI revolution
  • Sovereign AI is the new North Sea oil – the creation of the UK “Sovereign AI Industry Forum” has set the tone for the future. The UK has arrived not just consumers of big tech, we are actively involved, to shape it, own it and export it.
  • Skills, not scare tactics – forget the panic over robots replacing people, the real story around the work to be done in getting 7.5 million workers upskilled by 2030 and AI literacy being built into the school system at all levels. The UK’s “TechFirst” plan is a smart move to futureproof the next generation.
  • Smarter public services, not just private profit – from streamlining planning departments to helping social workers cut through admin, AI is quietly making public services more human, not less – we are actually finally getting somewhere.
  • The world is watching – the new AI innovation hub from Imperial College and the World Economic Forum shows that London is not just talking to itself, London and the UK are on the map and definitely playing to win.

AI in Education – Where It Really Gets Interesting

If there is one area crying out for intelligent disruption, it is definitely education. AI is making in-roads, however, with some much-needed nuance.

  • AI that adapts to every learner – the ultimate goal, which could see personalised lesson plans, instant feedback and learning tailored to the individual, this is the kind of classroom we need in 2025 and beyond.
  • Reading with a tech boost – storytelling can benefit from a digital upgrade, with pupils reading for pleasure and engaging in books that weave in tech concepts, helping to build digital literacy in young learners, as they understand how AI is shaping the world.
  • Teachers need a break (and some help) – tasks such as marking, admin, lesson planning (the bane of many an educators existence) can all be given to AI (with some tweaking) let AI take on the drudgery, freeing teachers to do what they do best – teach!
  • Inclusion by design – for pupils with additional needs, AI-powered tools such as speech-to-text and reading support can unlock new ways of learning, thus allowing everyone to participate in the new AI world.
  • CPD upgrade – imagine a teacher getting real-time suggestions to improve their teaching practice, based on live classroom input, this is potentially another area in which AI can be utilised, but thinking back to rules and regulations, we need to get that right.
  • Future skills today – AI in schools won’t be just about tech tools, it will be about helping pupils think critically about the services with which they engage and the systems which they may one day build, regulate or even dismantle.

The bottom line
AI is here, and we have a very clear choice – fear it, regulate it into stagnation or shape it into something that works for all of us. London Tech Week made one thing clear, the UK is betting big and it is about time.

Education is the proving ground and if we can get it right in the classroom, we stand a chance of getting it right everywhere else too.
